LIPIX

The Long Island Patient Information eXchange (LIPIX) is a RHIO comprised of 25 major hospitals and long-term care facilities throughout Long Island, led by the North Shore-LIJ Health System.  Founded in 2007, LIPIX chose InterSystems' HealthShare as its HIE platform and J2 as its technology partner to lead the HealthShare implementation.  LIPIX was among the first adopters of HealthShare, and the first to go into production with live patient data feeds.

As the systems integrator for the LIPIX HealthShare solution, J2 held primary responsibility for systems architecture, interface development, clinical data validation, and user interface customization for the first two years of LIPIX's existence.  The project required extensive coordination with the core LIPIX team, project teams from each of the participating healthcare organizations, and InterSystems product development.  By 2008, the impressive strides LIPIX was making with HealthShare had earned it a second round of grant funding from the State of New York's HEAL NY Phase V initiative.

Over time, as the size and capabilities of the LIPIX organization grew, J2 fulfilled its commitment to helping LIPIX achieve self-sufficiency with ongoing HealthShare development and maintenance.  In close coordination with LIPIX, we gradually reduced the size of our team until ceasing to provide full-time staff augmentation toward the end of 2009.  We continue to provide assistance to LIPIX as needed on special projects, which have included specialized authentication features, single sign-on capabilities, auditing and data anonymization utilities, and a customized patient consent application.

"Building a health information exchange from scratch wasn't easy.  One reason for our success was our decision to bring on J2 as our technology partner.  Their expertise in HealthShare helped us hit the ground running, and they also brought an extremely flexible and entrepreneurial mindset to the project.  Together we built software applications that expanded the boundaries of what an HIE is and what it can do for doctors and patients.  As our internal capabilities grew, J2 supported our gradual transition to self-sufficiency.  Though we had no prior experience with InterSystems technology, we can now integrate data providers and develop applications on our own, thanks in part to J2."
