Sweden NPÖ

The Swedish National Patient Summary project, or NPÖ, is an extremely ambitious project designed to facilitate the creation of an Electronic Health Record (EHR) for everyone in the country.  A vital part of Sweden's National IT Strategy for its healthcare and welfare sector, the NPÖ gives authorized care staff access to critical patient information, irrespective of the organization to which they belong, from anywhere in the country.  The solution is being implemented by Tieto, one of Northern Europe's leading IT services companies, using InterSystems' HealthShare platform.

Since 2008, J2 has played a critically important role in supporting both the Tieto resources responsible for implementing HealthShare and the HealthShare product development team itself.  J2 has worked directly alongside InterSystems software developers to design and build extensive customization of HealthShare to support the particular data formats and information exchange models required by the Swedish government.

J2's specific responsibilities have included:

  • Implementation of a customized SOAP framework specifically adapted to parsing the ISO 13606 format
  • Creation of multiple web services for exchanging admissions and clinical data between the HealthShare hub and external data providers
  • Design and implementation of a flexible scheduling mechanism for data synchronization operations
  • Development of HealthShare business logic to support various data-synchronization configurations (push, pull, on-demand, scheduled, mixed)
  • Design and development of several custom web applications to facilitate configuration, maintenance, auditing, and debugging of the HealthShare production environment
  • Validation and troubleshooting of third-party software that translates messages from ISO 13606 to the HealthShare SDA format and back
  • Rigorous acceptance testing and deployment troubleshooting in support of Tieto

Among J2's most significant contributions has been to the design and development of HealthShare Security Services (HSS), a software extension that has enabled HealthShare to meet Swedish legal requirements for authentication, authorization, encryption, and security.  Under InterSystems' direction, J2 has built a broad range of HSS components including multiple Ensemble services and operations, secure web services, second factor authentication, point-to-point interfaces for back-end components, and a new CSP-based user interface for login and consent capture.
